Learning ESL Obstacle

20 Aug 2008 | : Articles

There had been lots of theories on how to learn English as the Second Language and most them were successful, in the sense, that there were students who really learned the language.

Though it was proven that anything to be learned including English as the Second Language should be taught in the early age, in the long run, there are still other issues about the deficiency of the learner of the Second language.

In the non-English speaking countries, their culture is one of the obstacles that hampers the learner to learn the language to the fullest.  This is because of the thought that the learner might be responded in the negative view.

Some educators of the language termed this as ‘inferiority’ being felt by the learner when speaking the second language.  Though the reaction of in the community of a non0-native speaker will vary too, the impact will keep the learner to refrain from practicing via speaking the language.

For this reason, it is very important to give emphasis at the beginning of the lesson that speaking English will be a great practice for every ESL learners.  In addition, ESL teachers  especially non-native mentors to give imphasis on the speaking aspect of the learners.

The following article is a speech formulated by one of my friends currently pursuing her Nursing course.  She is on her 2nd year college and this speech is only one the requirements needed on her “Public Speaking” subject.

I consider this article as an example of how to formulate easy English essay.

Life’s Journey

By: Juenesse Fetalcorin, BSN - 2B

Life really / is full of challenges / and not all of us / have the chance / to go through with these challenges.  Though / we are all endowed with talents, / the choice of profession and occupation, / most of the time, / is dictated with environmental forces. /

There are persons / who became successful from their chosen endeavors. / The first person that attracted my attention / is our very own, / the first Asia wide to hold four titles / in four different categories. / From ordinary fish vendor, / he became famous because of his ability / to knock down all his opponents. / Your smile indicates / you know already / this successful person I’m talking about. / You’ve got it right. / Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao / is the first Filipino boxer / to hold four titles / in four different categories / in the boxing arena. /

His dedication to his works / had made him successful. / Though there were instances / that had been aired on T.V., / he did postpone the supposed to be scheduled training, / but when he started the training, / he really is following the training schedule religiously. / His being famous in the country / has opened him more  opportunities / like absorbing him / as a military reserve personnel, / if I’m not mistaken, / he gained a Master Sergeant rank / after his recent fight / with David Diaz of Mexico. / He also got the chance / to develop his singing career…. / Do you know the title of his song?…. /  I doubt it…. / GMA 7 also give him the opportunity / to host a program entitled / “Pinoy Records”, / not to include some of his product endorsement / that adds more to his wealth and prestige. /

Mr. Pacquiao maybe learned / or some of his family or friends / told him to continue his studies / because, / obviously, / he is no longer an ordinary Filipino, / but an icon / that represents the Filipino people. / His choice to continue his studies / will not only open him / another bunch of opportunities, / but also to enhance his knowledge / about his chosen course / and to learn / how to speak the English language. / We could note / that he is learning the language / the way he speaks on his interviews….

The second person that captivates my attention / is not totally a pure Filipino / but a Filipino-American vibrant guy / who is now one / to represent the Philippines / in the Beijing Olympics. / He is actually one / of the endorsers of Milo energy drinks. / You might ask / why I choose this person? Well, / it’s not only that I drink Milo once and a while / but I am really impressed / to individuals who are endowed with patriotism / and could be able to sacrifice a bit / for the sake of his/her mother country. /

I am talking about Miguel Molina. / He lives in Berkley, California, / but went home here in the Philippines /to represent our country / in Beijing Olympics / in the swimming competition. / His being patriotic inspires me / because not all Filipinos / who got the chance to go / and live abroad / return home with the same patriotic value. / In fact, / most often than not, / Filipinos migrating in the United States in particular / forget / if not totally eradicate / the mother tongue / and later the culture they possess. /

On one of Miguel Molina’s online interview, / it appears to me / that he was hailed with Filipino values. / Hopefully, / he is joining the Olympics for pure patriotism / and not for the money / and prestige that lay ahead. /

To end up my journey to life, / I would like to share my views / with regards to proper guidance.  / At our age, / since we are still in the process / of developing and building our own careers, / I believe, / we are still bound to be guided / by our parents or guardians. / Obviously, / there are numerous temptations around us / that if we get hooked up, / for sure, / it will hamper us to pursue our dreams / if not totally stop dreaming for this endeavor. / Proper guidance / really plays a very important role / in achieving a good life.

Living under the roof / and with the close monitoring of a priest, / I think, / is another thing, / but has contributed a lot / in achieving such goal. / The Las Piñas Boys Choir / is an example of produce / and as a result / of proper guidance monitored by a priest. / Of course, / both the Boys, / the conductor /and the Las Piñas parochial church / had played their best role in their lives. /

Base on psychological and physical developments, / this 9-12 age range is the gang age / where young individuals / learn the ways of grouping / in which / a factor that could separate / and divide each boys views. / This would have hampered there success / but because of proper training and guidance, / those obstacles had been overcame. /

As mentioned earlier, / guidance plays a vital role in our journey to life. / Let us listen to our parents / and guardians most of the time, /if not once in a while.

Good luck to all of us / and God bless us all.
